Finding Your Person
INTRODUCTION
[Groom] and [Bride], today is a day you have chosen to become husband and wife. We are gathered here to celebrate the love you share, the commitment you are making to one another, and the beginning of this next chapter of your lives together.
There is something special about finding your person. For much of life, we don't know exactly who we will end up sharing it with. We meet people, we make friends, we build relationships, and we continue moving forward. And then, at some point, we meet someone who makes us want to stop looking.
Someone we can imagine building a life with. Someone we want beside us for the celebrations, the adventures, the quiet evenings, and even the difficult days. And that's what makes today so meaningful.
[Groom] and [Bride], you aren't simply promising to love each other for the rest of your lives. You are choosing to experience the rest of your lives together.
Marriage is built in the big moments, but it is really lived out in the little ones. It's morning coffee. It's the long conversations. It's the inside jokes that nobody else understands. It's deciding what to have for dinner. It's taking care of each other when one of you isn't feeling well. It's celebrating each other's victories. It's sitting together when life doesn't go as planned. Those ordinary moments eventually become the story of your life together.
And that's one of the most exciting things about marriage: there is so much of your story that hasn't been written yet. There are places you haven't gone. Memories you haven't made. Holidays you haven't celebrated together. Adventures you haven't taken. Challenges you haven't faced. And countless moments of laughter that haven't happened yet.
Today begins all of that. Of course, marriage isn't about believing that everything will always be easy. There will be disagreements. There will be stressful seasons. There will be days when one of you is right and the other one is convinced they're right. But a lasting marriage isn't built on never having difficult days. It's built on having someone you are committed to standing beside when those difficult days come. So keep choosing each other. Keep listening to each other. Keep making time for each other. Keep laughing together. And don't become so focused on the big moments that you forget to enjoy the ordinary ones. Because someday, you may look back and realize that the ordinary days were actually some of the most important days of your life.
The beautiful thing about finding your person is knowing that you don't have to face whatever comes next alone. You have someone to celebrate with when life is good. Someone to lean on when life is difficult. Someone who knows where you've been, who you are today, and who gets to discover who you're becoming. And that's what you're promising each other today. You're saying, "Whatever the future holds, I want to experience it with you."
So, as you begin this marriage, remember what brought you here. Remember the excitement of realizing that you had found someone you wanted to spend your life with. Remember the friendship. Remember the laughter. Remember the moments that made you fall in love. And when life gets busy, continue making room for those things because love isn't something you simply find. It is something you continue to build. And today, [Groom] and [Bride], you are choosing to build that life together.
VOWS
Your vows are more than words you say today. They are promises about the life you intend to build together. Marriage is a lifelong commitment to continue learning one another, supporting one another, forgiving one another, and choosing one another.
Today, you are making that commitment publicly, surrounded by the people who care about you most.
(Personal Vows OR “I Do” Vows)
[Groom], do you take [Bride] to be your lawful wedded wife? Do you promise to love, honor, and keep her, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others so long as you both shall live? Response: I do.
[Bride], do you take [Groom] to be your lawful wedded husband? Do you promise to love, honor, and keep him, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others so long as you both shall live? Response: I do.
RINGS
These rings are symbols of the commitment you have just made. Their circular shape has no beginning and no end, reminding us of the lasting nature of the commitment you are making today. Every time you look at these rings, may they remind you of this moment and of the promises you have made to each other today.
(To Groom)
[Groom], please take [Bride]'s ring and, in placing it halfway on her finger, repeat these words after me.
“With this ring, I thee wed…and with all I am…and all I have…I honor you.”
